patched) it's fixed. What's more, I can no longer duplicate this bug on the Hardy machine (where I'd originally encountered the bug), even though it has the same version of mutt ( 1.5.17+20080114-1ubuntu1). I'm not sure what has changed, but I'm glad it's fixed. Thanks
