My system with the same problem has "CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800
Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro]" as the onboard display adaptor on an Asrock
775VM800 motherboard.
Worked fine in 12.04 but after upgrade to 12.10 I get a brief flash of
the splash screen followed by no video and no keyboard. Remot
I've never used RDP, perhaps it's different. With nx nomachine I get
two independent sessions. There are a few gotchas, e.g. only one
Firefox allowed so it won't run in both at once, but basically it just
works.
Maybe you could install NX, I see they do a mac client.

If you are at a remote location, you can ssh into the machine to do

/tmp/unity_support_test.0 before attempting remote login. See Bug
889996.

Probably the same problem, a simple document with a table and a couple
of fields gives the read error on 12.04 32bit.
The document was created on OpenOffice 3.2.0 on Ubuntu 10.04.
Installing libreoffice-base fixed it.

This seems to be the same as bug #225749.
I had exactly the same problem, and resolved it by downloading a more up
to date version of Hardy from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/hardy/daily-
live/current/ which seems to work perfectly out of the box. (The
20080620.1 build worked for me.)
