This seems to be the same as bug #225749. I had exactly the same problem, and resolved it by downloading a more up to date version of Hardy from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/hardy/daily- live/current/ which seems to work perfectly out of the box. (The 20080620.1 build worked for me.)
