I was having a similar problem with an IDE CD burner, it wouldn't erase
a CD-RW from k3b or wodim on the command line. However, when I connected
up an external USB burner it worked fine. Don't know if this helps shed

S3 Virge graphics
2x Onboard LAN: some kind of forcedeth, which is connected, and an 8139too,

I just tried installing the -rt kernel and stress testing the system by
watching a video on an nfs share while downloading updates in Synaptic.
The system locked up just as before, so it looks to me as though
whatever's causing the crash is present in there too.

In response to martyg's question about server kernels: it occured to me
too that the problem might be specific to the generic kernel, so a few
days ago I tried booting the server kernel instead. It crashed in
exactly the same way as the generic kernel though. I should have
mentioned it before...

Okay, I managed to get an older version of xorg.conf working, which
while not ideal at least makes the computer usable again.
It seems the problem wasn't so much with displayconfig-gtk failing to
preserve the settings as it was with xrandr/new display config system
not supporting s3virge (at least

I'm experiencing the same hard freeze with kernel 2.6.24-16. No wireless
here, just onboard ethernet. The same system worked just fine under
Gutsy, the problem's only started since upgrading to Hardy. My graphics
card is an old S3 Virge. Crashes usually appear when watching Youtube in

distmp3host starts normally after it's installed, whether it's a fresh
install, or a reinstall using 'apt-get install --reinstall distmp3'.
However, it doesn't start after a reboot, from '/etc/init.d/distmp3

While we're still using the buggy version 3, I discovered that it's
possible to run scilab in command line (as opposed to windowed) mode,
using the command 'scilab
As a temporary workaround, while we're waiting for the new version to be
released, it's possible to run scilab in text (i.e. non-windowed) mode
using the command 'scilab -nw'. This avoids the problem with the fonts.
Not ideal but it may help some people.

I don't think this is a bug in smbfs. Since I upgraded to Dapper, my
cifs (i.e. not smbfs) mount in /etc/fstab hasn't been working on boot.
