For me adding video=VGA-1:e helped only for limited time: after the
computer got into sleep mode and woke up again, the flickering problem
was back.

Following the suggestion of Markus (microsome), I've disabled ,,Window
Spread'' in unity-tweak-tool under the tab Window Spread. When closing
the tweak tool the screen blinked once and afterwards the issue
disappeared.

My kernel got upgraded from standard repositories. I use Dell Latitude
E5470. Now the touchpad and trackpoint are recognised:

The same here, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Latitude E5470, Bus 001 Device 004: ID
0a5c:5805 Broadcom Corp., not working.

OFF. Of course I can always click Ctrl+H or right-click and disable
showing hidden files. But it's annoying!
