Forgot, I'm running 10.10 on x86_64 quad core.
I followed the suggestion in bug 545521 and removed everything under
~/.gconf/apps/panel/general and ~/.gconf/apps/panel/toplevels, rebooted and
then everything worked (but all customization was lost of course).

Today it wasn't enough with dn.se but starting spotify/wine as well
triggered the crash. See attached xorg.log and dmesg.

I havn't had this problem again (admittedly I have not run the "Studio"
installation very much either) so reproduction may be difficult. Perhaps
it was some sort of incomplete configuration during installation that
has fixed itself since then?

After some more usage, I can see that the system is still unstable.
Sometimes it boots OK, sometimes it ends up with a black screen. I'v
been searching through the logs and found that when the black screen
appears there are no logs saved, just empty files (at least this goes
for dmsg.0 and xorg.0.l
Geee, today the problem reoccured, without compiz being installed anymore
(sorry for the accusation).
Additional observations:
The last messsage printed is about starting the cups deamon, after that the
screen goes black (changes from text to graphics mode?) and also the harddisk
rattle complete
