Version 295.59 did not resolve the X crashes for me, so I went back to
290.10. I did not notice if version 295.59 resolved this issue.

I also have a GeForce 8600 GT. I recently reverted to version 290.10 of
nvidia's binary driver because of Bug #973096 (random Xorg crashes.)
The reversion also seems to have solved my problems powering off the
system and changing to tty. It might be a coincidence, though.

A note in case others are still looking for a workaround.
I recently reverted to the nvidia-drivers 290.10, to avoid X session
crashes. The laptop has shut down correctly since then. This may or
may not be related.

I spoke too soon. The problem has recurred despite the workaround.
It seems to only happen now when shutting down. Restarting seems to
work correctly.

Yes, that seems to have done it.
Thank you so much for your help. Now I have to finish restoring all
the packages and settings I killed when I installed the development
release.

Hi Christopher, thanks for your instructions.
I ran your tests as well as I could.
The daily development .iso (Quantal) and the latest kernel (3.4.0--999)
both seem to restart and shut down correctly;
The development release produced internal errors, and the kernel broke
all my internet access,
Installing cups-filters from precise-proposed fixed the problem for me.
I had enough trouble stumbling through the process of applying the fix,
that perhaps someone with more experience could articulate the process
clearly for other users.
I think the required steps I followed were:
