Public bug reported: This is the same bug as #991977. Christopher Penalver was asking other affected users to run "ubuntu-bug linux" in terminal, so I did.
When I shut down my Dell Inspiron 1520, some hardware continues to run. Fans slow down, but they spin until the battery dies or else indefinitely if the laptop is plugged in. I see the same symptoms on my Dell XPS desktop at work using the same version of Ubuntu. I have tried editing /etc/default/grub as suggested elsewhere, with no effect. The symptom is the same whether I shutdown from the user menu, from the log in screen, or in terminal using "sudo poweroff", "sudo shutdown -h now", "sudo halt -p" As with others, switching to any tty using ctrl-alt-F1/6 gives a blank screen. ctrl-alt-F7 restores the session.
