I'm now posting from the other boot, the "clean" install. Here the sound is
still choppy, but the volume works and "sound settings" shows the sound card in
all the tabs.
I'm uploading again the apport details to see if there are obvious differences.

ExpressCard sound card plugged out, then the video is perfectly fluid (but of
course with no sound); then as soon as I plug the card in, and the system

Similar problem here - with a Creative X-fi ExpressCard audio card. Works if
inserted at boot, nothing happens (even in dmesg) if inserted later.
Is there at least a command to make the laptop see this card if I insert it
after boot? Something like a "re-scan ExpressCard port"?

I have the same problem. It wasn't there shortly after 11.04 release,
but it's there now. For me too, after 2-3 windows are open, one gets all
white. Resizing it below a certain size makes it reappear.

I have the same symptoms. Both Firefox and java processes are in the
"futex_wait_queue_me" state. It usually recovers after 20-30 seconds. It
usually happens right after starting Firefox, but sometimes also during normal
use.

I have the same problem of the original poster (no autocompletion with sudo
apt-get install), but I do not have the /etc/apt/apt.conf file. This is a
standard install of Ubuntu Jaunty from the regular desktop CD.
I tried the command "apt-cache pkgname gnome-" without the sudo, as suggested
above
It works now. I had to re-configure NetworkManager. Now it correctly detects
the modem, and I can connect with a single click (or set it to auto-connect).
Who should I notify to have the correct lines added to the 10-modem.fdi file,

On 8.04 the multimedia volume keys on my laptop (Volume+ and Volume-) used to
bring up an on-screen popup showing the volume level, and changing the volume
