I have a similar problem. I can often cause a crash of my NVidia X
server when ending an ediff session with emacs (emacs22-gtk, version
emacs-22.2-ubuntu2).
To recreate: Open emacs, open two files in separate buffers, type M-x

Actually, I have found that the problem has probably to do with
evolution-data-server and not evolution itself. If I click on the
'Clock' applet on my gnome-panel, the entire panel hangs until I
'killall gnome-panel'.
So evolution is probably hanging also when it tries to talk to EDS. Do

mime properties determines which application opens the file. So if
select an .html file in nautilus, select preferences->Open_with, then
select epiphany, then fie:/// urls are then opened by epiphany.
