I set it as default for my account (not for the entire machine) using System->Preferences->Preferred_Applications. This causes http:// urls to be openned by epiphany, but seems not to work for file:///. I don't think I should be using 'sudo update-alternatives' for this -- it is an account-wide preference(!).
