I seem to be able to reproduce this issue fairly reliably. I have
VirtualBox setup to share a folder with the guest OS. This shared folder
is being used as the iTunes music folder.
While playing music in the guest OS (i.e. reading lots of data from the
shared folder) the memory usage of gvfsd rise
I had this issue as well. It ended up being a problem with the IMAP
server choking on a particular email message. The number is the message
that is being requested when the IMAP server throws an error. Once I
deleted that message from the server, Evolution downloaded the rest of
my mail just fine.

I'm not sure that I agree with Timo's assessment.
I am experiencing this problem of a white screen after switching with
the fast user switcher. I can type my password into the blank screen and
the login is successful.
