Just to confirm, using kernel 4.2.0-16-generic, downgrading linux-
firmware to 1.148 caused the problem to reappear then upgrading it back
to 1.149 caused the problem to go away again.

I just did a testing, and I did receive the notification on my MX4
device. I did the following:
1) Install the "hello" from our Ubuntu store. It is a push notification client
2) Register an account with any name (nick) in the client
3) Open the webpage link at http://direct.ralsina.me:8001/
When
Mathieu's comment matches my experience of following the test case with
the lubuntu alternate image. The existing partition was set to 11.8GB
(after choosing max) and the partition for the new install was set to
2682MB.
