Sounds like this is just an (un)lucky case for bug 1605478. Sometimes it won't
crash if you're either:
(a) lucky enough to have a memory state that doesn't segfault; or
(b) running an X server somewhere else on the system.
In that case I would expect the Mir connection to fail with some err
More investigation is needed. The path *does* fix the problem, but in a
way that feels like it is a side effect.

If we could get a fix for bug 1577641 then this would be easy to solve
(in the most efficient way): Just start an 'Xmir -rootless ...' at
login.
That way you don't need custom launcher magic for every X app to start

The biggest problem with splash screens is on desktop: the first time an
application is launched Unity8 has no idea of its window constraints
(minimum, maximum and preferred sizes) so that it can choose an adequate
size for the splash screen.

dnsmasq (as opposed to dnsmasq-base) is not in main in Ubuntu, so relies
entirely on community support. It is not installed

This also affects php-json and some other packages in Trusty. I'm duping
bug reports here for the general "there are missing ddebs on Trusty"
issue. I note that affected users can rebuild the packages with
debugging locally and then reproduce issues locally with the locally
built packages as needed
And also, to be clear, this issue affects packages built in a window
within the Trusty timeframe only. Packages build more recently are not
affected as far as I'm aware.

Just to clarify:
Unity8 shows a contextual (app name, icon) and configurable (via
.desktop file atm) splash screen for apps that connect on the default
socket. That splash screen is replaced with the actual surface as soon
as the client *draws* to it.
