problem with the file dialog chooser. If I select PGN file from the
recent file list then it opens without any problems.

PS I have sorted records in fics.spa file according to ELO rating. If
you take just the first 100 lines from fics.spa then you will get
aliases for the fide top 100 pl

I had similar problem with large databases. I used the following trick:
A Gzip compressed file (e.g. filename.pgn.gz) can be used with pgnscid
conversion utility.
So
1) first compress your PGN database
gzip database.pgn
2) and then run
pgnscid database.pgn.gz
