I have an old (Toshiba Pentium 166) laptop and the pcmcia wireless card

The flash cards are likely formatted fat32 (vfat)
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/MOUNTPOINT should automatically pick the fs type
for you. If not, add a -tvfat to the mount command.

I've encountered some weird problems in my attempts to install a USB
scanner (Epson Perfection 1260) in my RH8 system. The problems
culminated in my CDROMs disappearing from the system whenever any USB
device (printer, scanner etc) is disconnected.

I just changed my mouse from a 2-button PS/2 mouse to a 2-button+scroll
USB mouse.
What I've noticed is that before getting the login screen of RedHat 9, I
get the "nVIDIA" logo for about 10/15 sec.! Another thing is that the
keyboard doesn't respond on the login

like 1394/iLink (firewire) devices. So when you're
adding them and looking for them, you want to look for
SCSI devices.
