Hello,
I just got ALSA installed on my redhat 9 dell inspiron 8000 with a
maestro3 sound card. The drivers load, but when gnome starts it reports
that it can't find /dev/sound/mixer. I tried a symlink to /dev/mixer,
but that didn't work. Any thoughts?
Thanks

I know it is a dumb question... But have you run kmix

I'm a bit tired of the sound quality, it is the cs46xx
driver that is not working well I'm sure, the volume
is barely audible, even with kickass speakers. I like
to replace it with alsa driver.
So, I decided to install alsa

I installed the latest stable release of ALSA on my Redhat 8.0 machine with
the Audiophile 2496 soundcard by Midiman. When I tried to run /dev/mixer it
gave me this message: "bash: /dev/mixer: Permission denied".
The three ALSA packages are installed, but I still have no sound, and do

I'm afraid I don't really understand what you're talking about.
You need the alsa-driver rpm and the alsa-kernel that matches the kernel
you're currently running. Install these at the same time then install
the alsa-lib and alsa-utils rpms.

Thanks for the link Emmanuel,
just one thing. The instructions for installation say that you must
install the drivers and the kernel patch at the same time. But the
kernel patch is an rpm, and the other is not. How do I install them at
the same time?
Also, if I install the alsa modules and

Hi
does redhat 8.0 come with the alsa drivers. If not, what is involved in
installing them? Do I have to install a modified kernel for alsa
support or what?

Hi,
can someone please help with how to get the alsa drivers working in Red

no errors appeared. But when I try to use, say xmmx, I get a message

I was using ALSA 9.0rc3 (most recent) with 7.3 (SBLive!, for what it's
worth) with no problem, but the same ALSA drivers won't compile on 8.0.
Comments?

The ALSA project (http://www.alsa-project.org/) has instructions
that describe how to go from the default OSS to ALSA's sound drivers.
However, suppose you aren't happy with ALSA. Is it relatively easy
to revert to OSS?

Hi,
I am using RH7.2 with full erratas. Before I upgraded to the latest

I try alsa 5.10a then compile the same problem happen

in emu10k1.c PCI_COMMAND Undeclared
PCI_COMMAND_IO Undeclared
and a lot of PCI_cmt undeclared.
I dont compile PCI support into the kernel because I
dont have such system (PCI Bus). Why the configure
script in alsa can not

Hi,
I am struggling to make alsa work with kernel 2.4.0
but not succesful. Use gcc 2.95.2 kernel 2.4.0

(something about the loop_per_sec change to
loop_per_jiffy not remember exactly) then wavefront.c
is Ok;

with the alsa-driver-0.5.10 release. The compile blows up
while building wavefront.c. My solution was to build it using the
--with-cards option, and specifying the drivers I wanted to build.

Although not on Redhat, I've been using ALSA for over a year with a nice
trident card. I still can use XMMS, Realplayer, etc. Once you've got it
up and running, most things work the same, depending on the card you
select. With the Trident card, I've also got nice things like
Anyone successfully converted a RedHat 7 system from OSS to ALSA?

All the flashy new audio software is coming out for ALSA, but I don't
