geting ALSA running

I installed the latest stable release of ALSA on my Redhat 8.0 machine with the Audiophile 2496 soundcard by Midiman. When I tried to run /dev/mixer it gave me this message: "bash: /dev/mixer: Permission denied".

The three ALSA packages are installed, but I still have no sound, and do not know what to do next. Can anyone help me out?
