Sorry for the late reply but I haven't been following the thread.
What is the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sdc" ?

Really? Did you try using /dev/sda1 as I suggested? Thanks.

If the zip drive indeed is the third (pseudo) scsi device (/dev/sdc) try
changing /dev/sdc4 to /dev/sdc1 in /etc/fstab. I don't know why Red Hat
automatically wants to use partition #4. Maybe it

Indeed you need scsi emulation. That is why the symbolic link /dev/cdrom
should be pointing to something like /dev/scd0, not to /dev/hdc.
To make sure the ide-scsi module is loaded at boot
to mount the /zip drive I get the following message:
/home>mount /zip
mount: /dev/sdc4 is not a valid block device
When the machine boots, it does recognize that /zip drive (see below)

Have you checked to see if /dev/cdrom is a dead symbolic link?
well um (Newby here) clicking it brings me to /dev/hdc (ok brings me to a
message that nautilus can't display that file), so I believe it to be alive
or is my method of checking faulty?
if I run:

Hello,
For some reason when I plop in a cd to make a backup, my system no longer
recognizes the cdrom drive.
mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device
(used to be automatic anyway...)
I am hoping that it's just a configuration file matter.

Not a single error. Well, my laptop does not have a good sound system,
so I don't load music CDs on it, but I have been installing software
from various CDs, and everything is working fine.

I solved the issue with depmod -ae. But, for the records, the first
possible solution I got was:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom AND
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
solved the error initially, BUT, after I reinstalled everything, it did
not work (???, I installed the same
