Having had a long look at the documentation for this package, I've opted
to move it down my priority list. It looks neat but scary. I've
decided to take the cowardly way out [ :( ] and just live with the vga prompt
form LILO as a middle ground. Thanks, David, for your interest, in any
case.

Well, had one pass through most of the documentation. Gulp! ;) I
always go into half time with software that directly writes to hardware,
with all the adventure that may cause! But, onward! May be a couple of
days, but I'll report back.

Thanks for this tip. I find that SVGATextMode is part of the RH7 full
install, so I have it on my machine :) The man pages are printing as I
type. I shall report back on my results.
