Well, had one pass through most of the documentation.  Gulp! ;)  I
always go into half time with software that directly writes to hardware,
with all the adventure that may cause!  But, onward!  May be a couple of
days, but I'll report back. 

FWIW, what also works is setting a per kernel stanza of vga=ask in lilo
and selecting a vga mode at boot time.  Then, in a terminal executing a
setfont command.  All the console font names are in /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts.

This latter bit shows that some great improvements can be made, even
without hacking the video card settings.  It'll be fun to see how good
it can be made to look, using SGATextMode.
