Do a Google search on the net for "xsane".
I installed my Microtek SCSI Scanmaker pretty easily and it works just as
well on linux as it did on win98. Gimp is a little crankier than Photoshop
was, but makes a very good replacement. And gimp interfaces nicely with
xsane and the scanner.

hmmm, look for sane howto and xsane howto files. I think it'll be them that
show you how to configure your scanner and get it going. The scanner has to
be twain compatible for any of the sane packages to support it though.

You need to know the model and brand, (easy you can see it) but look at
the xsane homepage (www.xsane.org). This should give you a start.

I appreciate the help all. Checked out SANE's page and thinking of
getting the Epson 1200 (or 1240) scanner. Cheaper by half than the HP
scanners and Epson isn't all that bad in the market place. I love HP
products however $399 for a USB scanner that only does 1200x1200 vs an
Epson for $199
Sorry if I'm too late to give advise here... two things:
1. you really need to look at SANE's home page and see what scanners are supported,
even better see what scanners the version you have supports. There has been some work
on USB scanners lately, you may want to consider upgrading.
2. I ha

Not a lot of help here I'm afraid in terms of Linux, but I must add my slice
of pie.

HP's website says that they support all HP stuff under Linux and they also
support the Open Source community...other than that check the hardware
section on www.linux.com I have the Primax Colorado 19200 USB
scanner...and according to Linux.com there is a Linux driver for it on

I have a UMAX Astra 1200 (I think) scsi scanner. It works beautifully
under both RedHat 5.2 and 6.0/6.2 with sane. I use xscanimage to actually

There are a few parallel port scanners that are supported, but many more
SCSI scanners. Not all the drivers are created equal, either, some are
much more developed than others, the Umax driver seems furthest along.
