Sorry if I'm too late to give advise here... two things:

1. you really need to look at SANE's home page and see what scanners are supported, 
even better see what scanners the version you have supports. There has been some work 
on USB scanners lately, you may want to consider upgrading.

2. I have found in general that all UMAX SCSI scanners work good, I think they have 
been supported the longest.
