How to drive external SVGA monitor from a laptop?

Hi all, I have Linux running on a laptop beautifully :-) Under Windows 95, I can use W95's Control Panel Display to have my display output goes to an external SVGA monitor (instead of or in addition to the LCD screen). Does anybody know how can I do that under Linux? Thank you very much for any
