prompt (ctrl + alt +F2) to reboot the computer. Sometimes I can boot to

Same issue here but with 13.10 64bit, however the problem for me was the
Nouveau display driver.
I am using Nvidia, and moved to a proprietary Nvidia driver, rebooted
and suspend now works fine.

PC has a quad core motherboard - suspend / resume still works o.k. when
an old kernel image [3.13.08 ?] is loaded.
Just repalced SSD SATA drive with a temporary empty USB drive to conduct
tests - loaded 14.04 [AMD 64 bit] - applied all outstanding updates
including 3.13.0-16

The battery level in Xubuntu's panel constantly shows as 0% on this
brand-new laptop, with either of the two batteries supplied with the
machine. The batteries are holding charge, and an LED on the machine
correctly indicates charging/charged (orange/green). On right-click ->
@Tim: Ben replied around the 18th of Februari that he sent the patch upstream
again (for the third time).
I would like for this patch to make it to the next LTS version of Ubuntu, do
you think there is a chance this will happen?

The bug is bag in 14.04 (but was gone in 13.10). The work-round proposed
OO-Dragon worksi.e. in /etc/default/grub, changing from:
[GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"]
to
[GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.reset i8042.nomux"]
...and then doing:
sudo update-grub
