Remove the gcompris-qt.conf and the one other and start again the application,
it should be better

I could not find the file.
In a directory with that has file
gcompris-qt.conf
only has one more file
gcompris-qt.conf.cBZctP
While in directory ~/.config/
there are 2 directories:
gtk-2.0
inkscape

Please can you try to remove your ~/.config/gcompris* files? (I don't know the
exact path on mac OS but there should be a gcompris-qt.conf inside your
~/.config)

This is weird, here the application launches properly, using macOS 10.13.6 too,
and I had report from other users that it works fine for them too.
It could be an issue with the OpenGL support on your computer...
