Got it working after installing some extra packages and modifying
/etc/network/interfaces based on the info in:
/usr/share/doc/linux-wlan-ng/README.Debian.gz
Here're the packages:
ii linux-wlan-ng0.1.15-1
ii linux-wlan-ng-modules-2.4.20-686 2.4.20-5+0.1.15-

I am using MA311 PCI card, Debian Testing, 2.4.20 kernel and
linux-wlan-ng downloaded from linux-wlan.org. Works like a charm.
