You don't say what version of X you are running, but the versio

you need to hav xfs running...
or comment out "unix/:-1" from your /etc/X11/XF86Ccnfig file
and add some explicitly defined FontPaths

After saving the settings and exiting, it kicks us back to the prompt,
so I was assuming the server was indeed dead.
