Do you have the font packages installed, like xfonts-base, xfonts-75dpi, xfonts-100dpi, xfonts-scalable? You don't say what version of X you are running, but the versions of X in woody and sid can handle not having xfs running -- but if it's not there, the fonts need to be in the hard coded paths.
