What have I managed to inadvertantly change?
Now, whenever an application opens a new window it opens under all
current windows so I have to right-click the gnome panel and select
'on top' and then click to maximize it.

win9x is the best thing that M$ ever did. Which may not be saying much but
still the L&F is alot better than the underlyeing crap that they write.

After a while I found Windowmaker, and set up a desktop with several handy dock
apps. A refreshingly approach to a personal desktop environment. Also,
