It was my impression that if you just apt-get install a new window
manager it'll automagically get added to the list. Do you already have
this new wm installed?
   

What list?  I don't see a list in my kdm...
 

One of the buttons on KDM has a pull-down list that allows you to choose 
which environment/wm you want to use. I don't recall, but as Scott 
mentions, I believe it's in the "Session Types" pull-down which is a 
sub-menu (IIRC) of one of the main buttons on the KDM window.
