If it is kdm from kde3 (aka Sarge etc), there is a directory /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions fulls of kde desktop entry files, that are supposed to cover all the possible cases. kdm just looks if you have the corresponding manager (the entry TryExec in the file) an if yes, shows the session in the menu.
