AFAIK there is no text-only Debian package of Emacs. I'm sure one could
be built, but there probably hasn't been much demand for it, as the
X-enabled version can still run in a console if you want it to.

After I made the mistake of doing a dist-upgrade on my stable woody
system, emacs and a bug in the ocaml installation script gave me a lot
of problems.
Emacs is running on the console but rying to run emacs20 on X11 results in:

I think I am going to solve a weird problem. I never managed to run
emacs20 with utf-8 encoded files. Now I know the reason. I am using
emacs20 and had the package user-de installed. This contains the file
/etc/emacs/site-start.d/50user-de.el

In emacs20, you don't need mule: it's part of emacs20. However, I'm
not sure if Debian version contains the leim package. You can download
and compile your self and make sure to include the leim package.

Could anybody help me on getting mule to work for emacs20. I want to
be able to read and write chinese characters, but everytime I get a
BIG5 encoded e-mail, all the chinese characters come out as square
boxes (under X). It works under Xemacs, but I would like to stay

I am trying to make a Latex calendar and have done it in the past with
emacs 19.31 and latex. When (in calendar mode) I try the
alt-cal-tex-mouse-month-landscape command, I get the error message: wrong
argument type: listp, return.
What does that mean? How can I get it to work?

system with the following steps:
1) Remove emacs19: dpkg -r emacs19
[leaving emacsen-common (1.4.8) installed]
2) Install emacs: apt-get install emacs20

Under potato I can't install emacs20 since it depends on liblockfile0,
and liblockfile0 'does not appear to be available', according to

I have never got the install of emacs20 (the deb package) right on this
machine. Since it was cluttering up every use of apt, I decided to put emacs19
on the machine and remove emacs20. I can't remove it. A typescript of the
