Adding acpi=force as a kernel boot parameter (in menu.lst for GRUB)
does the trick.

Is it normal to have kjournal average 45% CPU usage (nice = 0) when I
tar (without compression) a folder with 2GB of standard mp3 files on an
ordinary pentium 4, 512mb ram, dell box? I'm not too familiar with the workings

ambiguity of wether to call it 3.2 or 4.0 is just to keep people from
assigning etch a number?
I think this is quite logical, as there is some structure in those
numbers - 4.0 means a big leap, 3.2 m
The PC has 2 network cards. The first one is connected to an ethernet ADSL
modem. The second network card is connected to a 100Mbit switch which is
connected to my Powerbook.

when I lauch
cdrecord -checkdrive
I get the message:
Cannot load media with this drive!
Try to load media by hand.
What I am supposed to do ?
