Here's how I FINALLY got mine going
Grab a 2.4.* kernel from ftp.kernel.org as well as the newest pcmcia-cs
package from sourceforge.net. Then compile your 2.4.* kernel with whatever
options you require, however, eliminate ALL pcmcia options from the kernel.
If I remember correctly
I seem to recall seeing a recommendation to install the testing version
of debconf and then rerun the dist-upgrade.

I determined what my problem was. I was using vinson.home as my domain
as I don't own a real one. When I switched it to vinson.com it started
working. It seems pump requires a real dns name.

guile from 1.4 to 1.3, and remove a ton of other packages that require

It appears that the scripts in ip-up.d are not
run when a dialup connection is made. The
/etc/ppp/ip-up script runs, but the
'run-parts /etc/ppp/ip-up.d' line doesn't execute.

After booting from your floppy, maybe upgrading lilo (or reconfiguring it) will

(or just /sbin/ifconfig and look for the block near ppp0).

I can't get Xfree86 4.0.3 to work on my Compaq Presario 5820
It has a Voodoo3 3000 card and a ViewSonic E655 monitior.
Whenever I try to start X it always "clicks" in with a screen with a
bunch of horizontial pick stripes then "clicks" out with this error on

device manually in libvga.config, but that did not work either. As it turned
out, I had to make a symlink called "/dev/mouse" and have that point to

Did your rerun lilo after editing lilo.conf? Even if the kernel you just
compiled is corrupted or has a driver problem, lilo should still come up. You'd
just see a kernel panic or other error when booting that kernel.

my xdm setup is broken... :(
When I try to run xdm, it starts nicely showing the login-screen but
when I try to login it fails returning to the xdm login-screen.
Whats the problem?

I've had a problem with ppp slowing and stalling using Concentric.net as my
ISP since upgrading to the 2.2.x kernel series. I ended up getting a second

I did just manage to get the apt-get update to run successfully, but now I have
MD5Sum mismatch errors on all the packages I downloaded from
ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main.
It's only this box that has this problem though...so I think it has to be
