months without problems. Suddenly I'm getting numerous errors in reading
the disk; I can't give the exact error messages but they are of the form
"Atapi reset... error on reset.."

Thanks one and all. I tried two approaches:
- at LILO prompt I typed linux init=/bin/bash. This failed because the /
partition mounted read-only
- used Toms Rescue Disk. This allowed me to edit /etc/passwd and
/etc/shadow. Success!

I've seen the glibc2.1 in potato break and then fix Star Office
5.1 several times. The current version (2.1.2-0pre12) seems to break
the printing in Star Office. It has worked with 2.1.2-0pre9 (I think).

Looks like netscape-461/communicator-461 in current potato move back to libc5
version. It crashes with Bus Error on starting up every time. After I remove
xswallow things work fine again.

Memory question / concern,
First off, I am running a bleeding edge potato box and know that I will
get bitten more than once ;-) I just had the strangest thing happen, I
was on vc5 when everything just sorta stopped (interactive wise) but the

When trying to change the password of a user on my system, with
"passwd ", I get the error "Cannot open the password file."
I have no idea how this happened, but I am logged in as root,
and /etc/passwd is mod 644... I have shadow passwords installed,
and /etc/shadow is mod 640.
