know about the RAMDAC chip on the video card. Perhaps

was able to start it. But, when I start EMACS, the text is all wrong (I
think it uses wrong fonts). The XEMACS works OK with fonts, but doesn't
like the .emacs and other lisp files that worked OK with EMACS.

introduce an error in the setup that caused the
problems. I had in my /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers file
a -bpp 16 setting that the server didn't like.
Now I need to figure out the proper mode lines and
settings to get it to work at 1024x768 -bpp 16.

you are connected via ethernet? Similarly, I think it will be different when
you are connected via serial port.
I've used: x = `tty | grep 'tty[012345]'` to do exactly what you are
asking about.

OK, this worked. So I typed at LILO:
linux init=/bin/sh
and the system booted as single user without asking for a password. After this
I've gave the command:
# mount -n -o,remount /
I have insued a passwd for the root and one for my regular user. It was ok, so
I have rebooted (ctrl-alt-del).
Randomly, at times, my login screens fail to reappear
on any console after logging out on one console. All I have
found that works to make login screens appear is to reboot.
I am running a hamm system.

Being a raw debian novice the following have tripped me:
When booting I get "Unable to load charset 437". Where do I find it
and put it to quiet this error.
I tried to mount a partition as "vfat" in fstab and get an error
