I tracked the problem down to ECC failures. Here is what happens: first time
after format, the ftape gives ECC failures, but taper (the app I was using)
told me that it saw unknown data, and asked me if it should overwrite it...

I friend of mine has an adaptec 1542CP SCSI adapter, and we're using
the standard 1542 driver that comes along with the linux distribution.
The adapter is recognized just fine, however when using a SCSI CDROM

try putting the word "lock" in /etc/ppp/options.
also check your /etc/ppp/options and /etc/mgetty/mget

Use userdel from the passwd package.
I believe userdel is better than the deluser that used to come with
the adduser package, so deluser was removed.
