Thanks for your response! I tracked the problem down to ECC failures. Here is what happens: first time after format, the ftape gives ECC failures, but taper (the app I was using) told me that it saw unknown data, and asked me if it should overwrite it... before I made the connection between the ECC failures and taper "unknown data" error, I always picked "overwrite", and after that the tape worked fine except very slow due to write errors.
Anyway, the HOWTO states that this problem (ECC failure) can be caused by either bad ethernet or video card. I tried to unload my ethernet card's module, and it did not help. Do I have to physically take it out to make sure it's not at fault, or can I now safely assume that video card is the guilty one here? The video card is Cirrus Logic CLGD5434 and ethernet card is some very cheap ne2000 clone.
