It is confusing that openoffice will pick a font completely separate
from the KDE font if it cannot find the KDE font (at least, I think
this is what happened). The KDE fonts were set to be Helvetica, and
caused OpenOffice to use

i purged my old installation
apt-get --purge remove 'openoffice.*'
and installed it like
apt-get install openoffice.org
i do not prelink (because i think this crashes my libc6)
after that, i started it like in

I would like to know how to cleanly autoconfigure the user profile for
OOo.
I would like now, more specifically, to be able to configure user's
default directories.

I think it must be a problem with your font selection. Please can you
post the output of these commands:
COLUMNS=150 dpkg -l
fc-list
xlsfonts
If you do not have ttf-bitstream-vera installed already, does installing
it help?
