Python but the core is implemented in C) as a replacement of non-free
edit_dist.c?
It looks this file (and py-editdist) is licensed under the ISC License
(which is free) and looks okay.

Hello,
I just installed Warsow (never tried it before from synaptic), ran it,
it resized my screen then shut down.
Here is the output from a terminal :

I experienced the same problem with my notebook.
Using Etch Stable (installed from the CD), then upgrading to Lenny (to
get my Intel GMA965 chipset working well with 3D).
I've got a 32 bits Intel architecture (CPU = pentium M)
I solved the problem by :
