Have just updated the laptop and now it fails to suspend - most of the
UI freezes, essentially an unseen authentication prompt appears (in the
alt-tab list but the actual UI does not update), so no suspend happens.

ck-list-session lists the session always the same way. No matter how it
was started. When st

My guess is that it's because you don't have a consolekit session
properly set up when manually starting lightdm.
You might want to try starting lightd
Package: lightdm
Version: 1.10.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #741698
On my Laptop I usually start lightdm only when needed and not when
booting. I am using sysvinit and used the following two methods at
different times to disable autostarting of lightdm:
1.
$ sudo update-rc.d lightdm remove
2.

The other bug does mention some kind of shim that implements the dbus
service that could be used. I'm not sure how much testing or
development it wi

I see a similar bug with XFCE and systemd, when closing the laptop lid:
dbus[2301]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.systemd1' (using
servicehelper)
dbus[2301]: [system] Activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1' failed:

I had just filed this bug -
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=741861 - which I
believe now to either be related or a duplicate of this bug. I am using
systemd with XFCE from Jessie. I am however using version 1.8.7-1, not
the 1.8.8-1 in this report.

After upgrading to lightdm 1.8.8-1, the shutdown and restart options are
no longer available to me. When I downgrade to lightdm 1.8.7-1,
everything works fine.
The metadata below is from 1.8.7-1, since I've downgraded to that in
order to have
