Earlier in this problem record, I noted that the second control
sequence sent to the printer was
ESC 3 0
(hex 1B 33 30), which sets the line spacing to 48/216 of an inch.

OK, I've done some more research; and I think I now know what's going on.
I've always had excellent luck with the apsfilter/lpr combination in
the past, especially with old printers. I still have install CDs for
Debian Sarge laying around, which uses lpr as the print spooler. I
