I also ran into this problem where I couldn't run "grub-install /dev/hda"
(which ultimately fixed my problem) because I couldn't boot.
Here's how I was able to boot. I replaced this line:
search --fs-uuid --set ...
with
insmod linux
Then hit Ctrl+x
So in the end, it looked like this:
s

Just edit the menuentry by pressing `e'

That is not a sufficent answer - even for this problem nor for the problems with
grub 1.96!
