Yes, the problem existed without libc6-i686. My bad, I sidetracked #441975
because libc6-i686 had nothing to do with it anym

Update: after said experience, and now up-to-date sid, it works. Can
switch frontend to kde and no segfault.
Under the circumstances, the bug should probably be further downgraded
as it will be irreproducible and must have something to do with the
obscure state my system was in. I guess if anyone
