Bug also reproducible on linux-image-3.5-trunk. Switching back to 2.6.32 and passing "radeon.modeset=0" at kernel prompt solves the issue - no freezes. But with 3.2 and 3.5 even that does not work for my RV350. Definitively a kernel bug, please report upstream.

Just one question left: If I install  xserver-xorg-video-radeon Version: 1:6.13.0-2, shouldn't apt-get/synaptic automatically select the appropriate kernel version? I.e.   xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.13.0-2 should depend on linux-image >=2.6.32-4.

Sorry for the above text in the report. I just copy and pasted it due to a misunderstanding of the debian reportbug-tool. The problem: DRI is not being loaded like reported in bug #572926. Unfortunately an upgrade to the latest Radeon-driver did not fix it.
