I encountered a stack-smash error in apt-get caused by the contents of
the "Depends" header of one of my packages. While the crash occurred on
Ubuntu 14.04, the problem is still present in the apt sources as cloned
from git this

I had the same problem on a new Lenny install, and I've just managed
to stop the problem happening on my machine: I just installed the
libcurl3-gnutls package.

Just another confirmation - I get exactly the same problem.
Fresh vanilla Etch install from netinst cd to get base system, then I
add xorg and gnome-core.
Only other difference from the "norm" is that I uncheck the "install
recommended packages automatically" switch in aptitude.
