Just another confirmation - I get exactly the same problem.
Fresh vanilla Etch install from netinst cd to get base system, then I add xorg and gnome-core. Only other difference from the "norm" is that I uncheck the "install recommended packages automatically" switch in aptitude. Is there any way to debug this?
