If I stop GDM and call xinit as an ordinary user, everything works as expected,
e.g. I can
start Lyx from the X Term window, and no letters are missing &c.
If I start gnome-session from the same X Term window as a user who has
experienced the
problem under GDM, the problem appears just as it do
The problem only appears under GDM if the (default) new-style Gnome session
type is used.
So-called classic sessions work perfectly.
Squeeze could also be installed without any such problems.

Sorry, it was a severe hardware problem on the main board, probably the CPU − I

even boot up the system again once after shutting it down. This just goes to
