Subject: Bug#457896: sysvinit: "Could not get pty for /etc/rc.S/[script]"
You are right: I upgraded sysvinit from unstable, but
initscripts, sysv-rc, sysvinit-utils only from tested.
Sorry for the noise.
initscript
It seems to be only a boot problem:
After "modprobe -r pcspkr; modprobe pcspkr"
the console beeps again.

I had the same problem, when I
cut down /etc/uswsusp.conf by hand
to only
resume device = /dev/sda3
shutdown method = shutdown
(for some silly reason.)
dpkg-reconfigure uswsusp solved
the problem.

On the console the variable COLUMNS was as 80, as recommended by resize:

I was hit by the same problem today
after I installed grub-pc 1.96+20080724-14.
My thinkpad did not boot.
Reading the discussion on #497791 I could
finally 'fix it'.

I just downloaded lynx-cur 2.8.7dev9-2. Again
my symbolic link /etc/lynx-cur/local.cfg

I had 2:2.1.1-1 already installed for a while:
"apt-show-versions xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-intel/unstable uptodate 2:2
The two bugs are not longer reproducible on my system (Debian testing)

#417741 The list of events can now be updated

Hi,
2.6.23-rc2 has the same behaviour.
To set frequencies in multiples of 16 is good enough, but it could break
software which relied on different behaviour until kernel 2.6.18 ( or
on different behaviour on other machines.) So I would consider it as a
bug.

Martin
On Sat, 4 Aug 200
I tested adjtimex() more systemtically (on 2.6.22) and found
that only frequencies which are divisible
by 16 can be set. Other numbers are changed to the
next number below (in absolute value) which is divible by 16.
